Do you feel like you’ve lost the desire or passion for your work? If so, you’re by no means alone.
As Accountants based in Farnborough we have been speaking to our trade industry business clients who are telling us the same things.
Many are feeling tired, overworked or overwhelmed and it’s draining their energy resources. Energy that is needed to make decisions, to innovate, to overcome bad habits, and to get excited or enthused about the future.
Without having this energy, you are unable to do anything other than get through each day. As you can imagine, this isn’t doing anyone any good and it certainly won’t grow your business.
As accountants specialising in the trade industry, we want to share 3 steps that will help put you back in the driving seat
Step 1: Identify 'Why' You are Feeling This Way
Reflect on why you may be feeling lost. What has caused your loss of desire or motivation? Are there certain tasks or thoughts that are draining your energy? What are you most stressed/worried about at the moment?
It may help you to also think about what your motivations are too. Not only will this help you figure out what is lacking in your life, but it will also remind you of the bigger picture to give you the motivation to keep moving forward.
What are your motivations – cash, time, control, peace of mind? Give yourself a score out of 10 for each both for now and where you want to be in the future.
Step 2: Start Looking After 'You'
Our own self-care is usually put on the backburner in normal life, so we imagine it is quite non-existent with everything that is going on right now. However you are feeling – burned out, overwhelmed, exhausted etc – prioritise taking care of yourself will help you to pick yourself back up.
• Sleep – are you getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night?
• Food and drink – are you eating/drinking as healthily as possible? Are you eating the right foods that give you energy?
• Exercise – are you getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day?
• Recharge time – are you allowing yourself to switch off regularly?
Again, give yourself a score out of 10 for each area both for now and where you want to be in the future. Keep track of these scores over time to make sure you are improving in each area.
Step 3: Put Yourself Back in Control
Using your score results from the 4 motivations and self-care areas, create a plan to put yourself back in the driving seat. For example, if having more time with your family is your motivator but you’re lacking in self-care, create a plan that helps you to work more productively during work hours so that the rest of the time is for your family and for you.
Here are some other ways you can rediscover your desire and start growing your business again:
- Accept the current reality.
- Reconnect with your why.
- Start putting together a growth plan.
- Get a coach to help you over any roadblocks.
- Take some time out to recharge and get perspective.
- Look for some small wins to help you get momentum.
- Take more control of your time.
- Surround yourself with people who make you feel good and support you.
